Landfill Leachate Treatment and Recovery

Landfill Leachate Management

Leachate Recycling using Evaporation

1. Leachate is fed, along with acid, to the R-Vap Mechanical Vapor Recompression Evaporator.

2. In the R-Vap unit the leachate is concentrated producing distilled water (~95%) and a concentrate (~5%).

3. The concentrate can be sprayed back onto the landfill.

4. Distillate can be discharged directly to the sewer without further treatment.

Lanfill leachate treatment using LFG and a diesel engine to power a compressor.

Using LFG to Power Compressor

1. Landfill gas (LFG) is used to power a diesel engine.

2. Diesel engine rotates the shaft for the steam compressor on the R-Vap unit.

Benefits

  • Low cost
    • Recovery costs for the leachate using electricity is ~$0.01 per gallon.
  • Can use YOUR energy source
    • Compressor can be driven by diesel engine using LFG or an electric motor. (R-Vap unit typically uses an electric motor to drive the compressor.)
  • No harmful dust
    • Concentrate that is sprayed back onto the landfill is a liquid. Therefore, there are no dust particles that can be affected by the wind.
